Cassa Mbungo André has been officially named head coach of Rwanda’s women’s national football teams, a role that will see him oversee both the senior squad and youth categories.

The Rwanda Football Federation (FERWAFA) confirmed the appointment on Sunday, March 2, solidifying his position at the helm of women’s football in the country.

A strategic appointment for women’s football

Beyond coaching responsibilities, Mbungo will also contribute to the development of women’s football within the National Technical Directorate.

His appointment comes with a two-year contract, underlining the federation’s commitment to long-term progress in the women’s game.

According to sources within FERWAFA, the deal is aimed at creating continuity and fostering growth at all levels of Rwanda’s women’s football structure.

A coach already familiar with the squad

Mbungo is no stranger to She Amavubi. He previously led the team during the 2026 Africa Women’s Cup of Nations (WAFCON) qualifiers, where Rwanda showed signs of promise despite an early exit.

In their two-legged encounter against Egypt, the Rwandan side managed a 2-2 draw at home but ultimately fell 3-2 on aggregate, ending their campaign.

While the result was disappointing, there was a noticeable improvement in the team’s performance under Mbungo’s guidance.

The tactical discipline and competitive spirit displayed during the qualifiers earned praise from players and supporters alike.

Strong player backing for Mbungo

Despite the team’s elimination, several players publicly expressed their support for Mbungo, urging FERWAFA to retain him as head coach.

Many highlighted the positive impact of his coaching methods, which they believe have helped the squad develop technically and mentally.

His reappointment reflects FERWAFA’s confidence in his ability to shape the future of Rwandan women’s football.

With his continued leadership, the focus will now shift towards laying the foundation for a more competitive national team, capable of making a mark in future international competitions.

The road ahead

With his official appointment now confirmed, Mbungo faces the challenge of preparing She Amavubi for upcoming tournaments while also nurturing the next generation of talent.

His task includes:

  • Strengthening the senior team to compete at a higher level in future qualifiers.
  • Enhancing youth development to ensure a pipeline of skilled players for the national team.
  • Implementing long-term strategies to improve Rwanda’s standing in women’s football on the continental stage.

As Rwanda looks to build on recent progress, Mbungo’s leadership will be key in shaping the nation’s ambitions in the women’s game.

With backing from the federation and players, he now has the opportunity to establish Rwanda as an emerging force in African women’s football.
