Manchester United midfielder Casemiro has revealed that legendary French icon Zinedine Zidane remains the defining influence behind both his football journey and professional mindset.

Speaking in an interview with DAZN, the Brazilian reflected on his early football education, admitting that watching elite players on television shaped his ambitions long before he became one of Europe’s most accomplished midfielders. Among the stars he admired as a youngster, Zidane stood above all others.

“When you’re a kid, everyone on TV is a role model. I really enjoyed watching those players,” Casemiro said, before adding: “For me, Zidane is number one. I always looked up to him a lot.”

Fate later brought the two together at Real Madrid, where Zidane coached Casemiro during one of the most dominant eras in modern club football.

Their partnership delivered multiple major honours, including a historic run of UEFA Champions League titles, cementing the midfielder’s status as a key figure in Madrid’s golden generation.

Beyond trophies, Casemiro emphasised that discipline and continuous improvement have defined his longevity at the highest level. The 34-year-old highlighted his commitment to preparation and learning as central pillars of his career.

“I try to be the first one in the gym and give my all in training too, not just in matches,” he explained.

The Brazilian added that growth extends beyond football, stressing the importance of humility and openness in everyday life. “You learn something every day, in football and in life… the important thing is to have an open mind.”
