Casablanca rolls out special mobility plan as AFCON 2025 kicks off
With the countdown to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations entering its final phase, Casablanca is moving swiftly to ensure the city keeps pace with the demands of a major continental tournament.
Morocco’s economic capital has unveiled an extensive mobility strategy designed to keep traffic flowing smoothly as thousands of supporters converge on match venues and fan zones across the city.
Public transport sits at the heart of the plan. The tramway and busway networks have been visually transformed in AFCON colours, aligning with the city’s official tournament branding and reinforcing the sense of occasion ahead of kick-off on Sunday.
Beyond aesthetics, operators have focused on practical measures to reduce congestion and improve passenger experience during what is expected to be a period of sustained pressure on urban transport systems.
Authorities have launched a targeted communication campaign urging regular users of the tramway and busway to recharge their travel cards in advance. The aim is to ease pressure on ticket offices and customer service points, particularly on matchdays.
Online top-up options are fully operational through dedicated websites and mobile applications, allowing passengers to manage their journeys without unnecessary delays.
Information services have also been upgraded to meet the needs of an international audience. A special AFCON transport map has been introduced, supported by multilingual digital information systems and dedicated signage across the network.
In a nod to the tournament’s significance, a limited-edition transport ticket bearing AFCON 2025 branding has been released, adding a symbolic touch to daily travel during the competition.
Special attention has been given to stations near the main stadium and the city’s 13 official fan zones. Additional multilingual staff will be deployed on site to guide visitors, provide real-time assistance and help manage crowd movement.
Transport services will be reinforced on matchdays, with increased frequency before and after games to accommodate spikes in demand and reduce waiting times.
To safeguard operations, a dedicated monitoring committee has been established to respond quickly to incidents such as equipment damage, accidents or acts of vandalism. Urban mobility teams remain on high alert, coordinating closely to ensure rapid intervention when required.
City officials say the objective extends beyond logistics. By delivering efficient, accessible and well-coordinated transport, Casablanca aims to contribute meaningfully to the success of AFCON 2025, positioning the city as a capable host.
