CAS schedules December hearing in Riveiro’s compensation dispute with Al Ahly
The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has scheduled a hearing for 9 December 2026 in the dispute between former Al Ahly coach José Riveiro and the Egyptian club over compensation following his dismissal.
According to WinWin, CAS confirmed that two separate proceedings involving the Spanish coach and Al Ahly are ongoing, with an in-person hearing set for December.
“The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) confirms that there are two ongoing proceedings between José Riveiro and Al Ahly club, and an in-person hearing has been scheduled for 9 December 2026,” the report quoted the court as saying.
The case follows a February ruling by FIFA’s Players’ Status Chamber ordering Al Ahly to pay Riveiro US$588,000 (approximately R9.6m) in compensation after the termination of his contract.
The award reportedly includes compensation equivalent to three months’ salary under a termination clause in his contract.
Al Ahly subsequently announced plans to challenge FIFA’s decision at CAS, setting the stage for the latest proceedings.
Riveiro’s contract was terminated on 31 August 2025, just three months after he took charge of the Egyptian giants. His departure followed a 2-0 defeat by Pyramids FC in the Egyptian Premier League.
The Spaniard managed Al Ahly in seven matches, recording one victory, four draws and two defeats, according to Transfermarkt.
Following his departure, Emad El Nahhas was appointed interim coach before Al Ahly turned to Danish manager Jess Thorup.
Riveiro has since taken charge of Swedish side AIK as he continues his coaching career.
The dispute also extends to Riveiro’s former assistants, who are involved in a separate case against Al Ahly after FIFA’s Players’ Status Chamber ruled in their favour.
The scheduled CAS hearing will be the next major step in the legal battle over the financial obligations arising from Riveiro’s departure.
