CAS orders Al Ahly to pay ex-coach Jose Riveiro $588,000 over unfair dismissal
The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has ordered Egyptian football powerhouse Al Ahly to pay former head coach José Riveiro $588,000 in compensation following his dismissal after just seven matches in charge.
Riveiro, who took the reins of the CAF Champions League record holders during the FIFA Club World Cup, managed only four additional league games before the club’s management ended his tenure.
While Al Ahly initially described his departure as a “mutual agreement,” Riveiro challenged the decision at FIFA, which has now ruled in his favour.
In response, Al Ahly confirmed plans to appeal the ruling once the official documentation is received.
In a statement, the club’s legal advisor, Dr. Abdullah Shehata, said: “The club will file an appeal before the International Sports Court (CAS) against the judgment issued by the International Football Federation Players’ Status Chamber (FIFA) in favor of the Spanish, José Ribeiro, former technical director of the first football team, “compensation for a total of $588 thousand, including the penalty clause stipulated in the 3-month contract”.
“This step will be completed after a maximum of 3 weeks, after the club receives the reasons for the decision issued in favour of the Spanish coach, pointing out that the judgment is not final, and there are other degrees of litigation, and the appeal will be made in accordance with the procedures followed in this regard.”
During his brief spell, Riveiro oversaw seven matches, registering one win, four draws, and two losses.
