Morocco to Participate in 2017 and 2019 CAN Qualifiers After CAS Cancels CAF Sanctions
Morocco has received good news, with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) annulling the sanctions imposed by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) following the country’s withdrawal from hosting the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations (CAN). This decision paves the way for Morocco to participate in the qualifiers for the 2017 and 2019 CAN tournaments.
CAF had originally imposed hefty sanctions on Morocco, including a ban from participating in the 2017 CAN qualifiers and a $9 million fine for withdrawing from hosting the tournament. However, the CAS ruling has significantly reduced the fine, which now stands at $50,000.
Despite this victory, Morocco may still be required to compensate CAF for the damage caused by its withdrawal, with CAS leaving the possibility for further examination of this issue by another jurisdiction.
This decision marks a positive turn for Moroccan football, ensuring the country’s return to continental competition.
