Carrick explains Manchester United’s three midfield signings as Zirkzee praised

Michael Carrick says Manchester United’s decision to sign three midfielders during the summer transfer window was made with the demands of an entire season in mind, rather than to prepare for a single match.

United travel to face Everton in the third round of the Premier League, with Carrick also praising Patrick Dorgu and Joshua Zirkzee ahead of the fixture.

“Three midfield signings? I hope everyone stays fully fit and available, because we are not putting together a squad for just one match on Sunday. We need a squad for the whole season and we have to give them different options,” Carrick said at his news conference.

“Sometimes we need to make changes during a game or from one match to the next. We have to balance things and find the best possible balance.”

Carrick added that injuries and suspensions could affect his selection options as the campaign progresses.

“Injuries and suspensions may happen, and we have to get through that. But right now, we have a very strong squad,” he said.

The Manchester United manager also explained why Dorgu has not been used regularly at left-back, despite the player having experience in that position.

“He can definitely play there and he has done so before. I am not saying he cannot, but this is the way we have been using him since I joined the team,” Carrick said.

“He played only three or four matches with us last season, so I see him as almost a new signing. He has added a lot to the team.”

Dorgu has also featured on the right wing for Denmark and scored an impressive goal this summer. Carrick believes the 20-year-old’s versatility and ability should be used to maximum effect.

“He played on the right wing for Denmark and scored a great goal this summer. Sometimes in training, because of his age and the ability he has, we have to make the most of what he can offer,” he added.

Carrick confirmed that Zirkzee would remain with Manchester United after the summer transfer window closed and described the Netherlands international as an important member of the squad.

“He is an important player for the team, for the starting line-up and for the depth he provides. He is happy here and I have a very good relationship with him,” Carrick said.

“He wants to play more than he has played, and that is healthy competition. We have many matches coming up, the rest periods between games are short, and Josh is capable of producing excellent performances. I have seen that myself.”

Manchester United began the season with a defeat by Hull City before responding with a commanding victory over Ipswich Town, scoring five goals.

They currently sit 10th in the Premier League with three points, while Everton are seventh with four points.
