Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick has resisted the temptation to define a single role for Patrick Dorgu, insisting the young defender’s versatility is one of his biggest strengths as the club prepares for a demanding trip to Arsenal.
Dorgu has impressed since being handed greater responsibility on the left side, operating both as a full-back and further forward when required. Carrick believes that flexibility is key to maximising the player’s impact, rather than limiting him to one position.
Ahead of today’s clash at the Emirates Stadium, Carrick made it clear that Dorgu’s adaptability gives United valuable tactical options.
“I think he can do both,” the United boss said. “He was immense last week (against Manchester City). His work rate and the way he plays the position, his general play was something we’re really pleased about.”
Dorgu’s performance in the derby win over City caught the eye, not just for his defensive discipline but also for the energy and intent he showed going forward. Carrick was keen to highlight that balance, stressing that the player’s attacking threat is an important part of his game.
“I wouldn’t want to pin him down, because I think he can do both,” he added. “Certainly attacking-wise, and that threat, he was pretty impressive last week.”
United head into the Arsenal fixture looking to build on recent improvements in form and confidence. Carrick believes the mood within the squad has been steadily lifting, shaped by what he and his coaching staff have seen on the training ground as much as on matchdays.
Reflecting on the challenge ahead, he said: “I’ll be honest with you, I think the confidence I’m taking going into the game is what we’ve seen since I’ve been here, between me and my staff, in terms of the game itself, training, how the boys have gone about it.”
