It has come to light that reports suggesting that Chelsea loanees Carney Chukwuemeka and Lesley Ugochukwu have begun the process of switching their international allegiance to Nigeria is false.
Social media was abuzz on Friday with claims that both players had submitted their paperwork and were close to completing the switch. Some reports even suggested that they had been included in Nigeria’s 31-man squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers.
However, a top NFF official has dismissed the speculation, clarifying that only the federation has the authority to initiate such a process on behalf of players.
“Only a federation can apply on behalf of players if they intend to switch. The news circulating now is fake news,” the official stated.
For now, neither Chukwuemeka nor Ugochukwu has made any official move to change their international allegiance, leaving their future with Nigeria’s Super Eagles uncertain.
Both players are however eligible to play for Nigeria.
