Carlos Queiroz nears new Ghana deal after World Cup progress

Carlos Queiroz is close to extending his time as Ghana manager after reaching a new agreement in principle with the Ghana Football Association, according to Ghana Soccer Net.

The Portuguese coach took charge of the Black Stars on a short-term contract before the 2026 World Cup. His initial four-month deal ended with his future uncertain, but negotiations over a new contract have made significant progress after outstanding payments owed to Queiroz and his coaching staff were settled.

The Ghana Football Association is understood to have cleared financial obligations linked to the contracts of the manager and his assistants during Ghana’s World Cup campaign, with support from the Ministry of Sports.

Resolving those payments is believed to have removed a major obstacle in discussions between the two parties. Talks have now reached an advanced stage, and Queiroz is expected to sign his new contract in the coming period.

Queiroz was appointed Ghana manager in April after Otto Addo was dismissed in March following a run of disappointing results. Despite having only a short time to work with the squad, the experienced coach guided the Black Stars to the round of 32 at the World Cup.

Ghana were beaten 1-0 by Colombia at that stage, but the team’s progress under Queiroz strengthened his position and increased the likelihood that he would remain in charge.

If the new agreement is completed, the former Egypt manager will lead Ghana in their qualification campaign for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.

The Black Stars are scheduled to begin their qualifying campaign away against Cote d’Ivoire on 24 September. The match is due to take place at Stade de la Paix in Bouake.

Ghana will then return home three days later to face Gambia at the Accra stadium.

The Black Stars are determined to qualify for the next Africa Cup of Nations after missing the previous edition, which was hosted by Morocco.

Queiroz’s potential continuation would give Ghana stability ahead of that campaign, following a period in which the national team changed managers after a disappointing sequence of results. The Portuguese coach took over in 2026, before overseeing the side’s World Cup involvement on a short-term arrangement.

The final details of the proposed contract are still to be completed, but the latest developments suggest Queiroz is now close to formally continuing as Ghana manager. The agreement would allow him to prepare the team for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, beginning with the difficult away fixture against Cote d’Ivoire before the home match against Gambia.

No signing date has been confirmed, although the report says the contract is expected to be completed soon.
