Carlos Queiroz hails Black Stars resilience at 2026 World Cup

Portuguese tactician Carlos Queiroz has expressed pride in what the Black Stars, technical team and Ghana Football Association (GFA) achieved at the 2026 FIFA World Cup despite the difficult circumstances surrounding the team’s campaign.

The West African football powerhouse defied expectations to reach the knockout stage of the global showpiece for the first time since 2010.

Ghana finished third in Group I to secure a place in the Round of 32, where they suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Colombia and were eliminated from the tournament.

Following discussions between Queiroz, the GFA and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, the former Real Madrid coach has been entrusted with continuing as head coach of the Black Stars.

Queiroz is expected to lead Ghana into the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, which kick off this month.

Reflecting on the team’s World Cup campaign, the experienced Portuguese coach said he was proud of the players, technical staff and football federation for their efforts despite the challenges they faced.

“Serving Ghana is far more than coaching a football team. It is a privilege, a responsibility and a mission to honour one of Africa’s greatest football nations and its incredible and passionate football people.

“I am proud of what our players, staff and Federation achieved together under challenging circumstances at the 2026 World Cup final competition. Their courage, discipline and commitment restored belief, competitiveness and the pride of a nation,” he wrote on social media.

The Black Stars will now turn their attention to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, beginning with an away fixture against Ivory Coast before hosting The Gambia on home soil later this month.
