Carlos Espy hails ‘dream’ Real Madrid start after late winner against Elche

Carlos Espy says his opening weeks at Real Madrid have been “a dream” after scoring a 92nd-minute winner against Elche in La Liga.

Real Madrid won 3-2 in the sixth round of the competition, with Espy coming off the bench before deciding the match late on.

“I am very happy. As I said, I am once again the happiest man in the world,” Espy told the club’s television channel. “I always try to help the team in any way I can, and every time I play I give everything I have.”

The goal was Espy’s second for Real Madrid since joining the club. His two strikes have earned the team six points.

“I could not have imagined starting my time at Real Madrid like this,” he added. “It feels like a dream, but the work does not stop. We will continue working and focus on Sunday’s match.”

Espy said the victory reflected the contribution of the entire squad, rather than just his own late intervention.

“This is really a team effort,” he said. “Whenever one of us comes on, we have to take our chances and give everything we have. I am very happy about that.”

He also praised team-mate Kylian Mbappe, who set up the winning goal.

“Watching Mbappe train and play is absolute madness,” said Espy. “He created the goal for me, and I am also very happy to have scored.”

Attention now turns to Espy’s first derby with Real Madrid. The forward said the squad were determined to build on their victory against Elche.

“We have a great deal of enthusiasm and passion,” he said. “This will be my first derby and, honestly, we have a strong desire to play it with full intensity and win.”
