Real Madrid forward Carlos Espi became the first player to score five goals in a single match for Spain Under-21s as they overwhelmed San Marino 13-0.
The 20-year-old achieved the landmark on his first start for the under-21 side, despite making only his second appearance at this level. He also supplied two assists as Spain produced a dominant performance.
“It’s a special night,” Espi said after the match. “I really wanted to be here, to help the team, and I’m very happy.”
Spain controlled the contest from the opening stages, with Espi repeatedly finding opportunities inside the penalty area. His movement and alertness allowed him to take advantage whenever the ball broke his way.
“We came here motivated to win and we fought until the end,” he added. “We knew we were going to be in the box. I was ready for any rebound, any moment, and I was there.”
Spain Under-21 coach David Gordo was pleased with Espi’s contribution, particularly the forward’s ability not only to finish chances but also to create openings for his team-mates.
Espi said he was proud of the response from the rest of the squad and shared the achievement with his team-mates. He also dedicated his record-breaking display to his family and friends.
The quality of the opposition means the result must be considered in context, but Espi’s effectiveness in front of goal has become increasingly evident in recent weeks.
He had played only 26 minutes for Real Madrid across their opening eight matches of the season. However, late goals against Espanyol and Elche helped the club secure four points.
His five-goal display for Spain Under-21s has offered another indication of his natural finishing ability and his capacity to make an impact when opportunities arise.
For Real Madrid, Espi provides an alternative attacking option. His main strengths are his movement and instincts inside the penalty area, where he has shown that he can react quickly to loose balls and position himself effectively to score.
Real Madrid’s next match is against Villarreal CF in La Liga on Saturday, October 10 at the Santiago Bernabeu in Madrid.
