Cameroon star Carlos Baleba to miss Manchester United debut with ankle injury

Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has revealed that Cameroon international Carlos Baleba will have to wait for his debut after suffering a minor ankle problem.

Baleba, who recently joined United from Brighton in a reported £70m deal, is expected to be sidelined for two to three weeks, ruling him out of Sunday’s Premier League meeting with Ipswich Town.

Carrick said the injury was known before the transfer was completed and insisted there was no major concern over the 22-year-old midfielder’s condition.

Baleba faces short spell on sidelines

“He has a minor ankle problem that could keep him out for two or three weeks, but we were aware of that beforehand so it’s not a big problem, and it will be great to have him with us as soon as he is ready.”

The Cameroon international’s absence means United supporters will have to wait before seeing their new midfielder make his competitive debut.

Carrick remains confident about what Baleba can offer once he returns to full fitness.

“He has tremendous potential and capabilities, and this is a very exciting deal for us. The quality and characteristics he possesses bring balance to the squad and provide different options, and I am very happy to have signed him, especially since he has a lot to offer in the future.”

United looking to respond at Old Trafford

United are preparing for their first home match of the season after suffering a 2-0 defeat away to newly promoted Hull City in their opening league fixture.

Carrick wants his side to respond in front of their home supporters against Ipswich.

“The first home game of the season is the event we are most looking forward to. We had a setback last week and we want to bounce back and win games. We have a good squad of players and we can choose different combinations, and everyone is in strong competition to participate.”

Mount returns to training

Carrick also provided updates on several other members of his squad.

Amad Diallo will miss the Ipswich game and remain unavailable for a little longer, while Mason Mount has returned to group training this week.

“Amad (Diallo) will not be available this week and will be out for a little longer, while Mason (Mount) has returned to training with the group this week, which is very positive for us.”

United will therefore face Ipswich without Baleba as they attempt to recover from their disappointing opening-weekend result, with the Cameroon midfielder now targeting a return once his ankle problem has cleared.
