Carlo Ancelotti backs Vinicius Junior despite criticism at Real Madrid

Carlo Ancelotti has defended Vinicius Junior, saying the Real Madrid forward remains one of the best players in the world despite criticism over his current form.

Ancelotti, now Brazil manager, was speaking in an interview with The Times of India during the national team’s friendly tour of Australia, India and Singapore as they prepare for their upcoming commitments.

Asked about Vinicius’ performances and the criticism directed at him in Madrid, Ancelotti said the forward’s quality was beyond doubt.

“He may not be at his best at the moment, but there is no question about Vinicius’ quality,” he said. “For example, he produced a fantastic performance at the World Cup. As a player, nobody can be at their best all the time.”

Ancelotti, who previously worked with Vinicius at Real Madrid, added: “He is a fantastic player, one of the best in the world. I am sure he will be at his best in the coming matches. I have complete confidence in him.”

The Italian also outlined his long-term plans with Brazil and said the current friendlies were being used to assess players who could form part of the squad for future major tournaments.

“These matches are very useful because they usually give us the opportunity to watch different players,” Ancelotti said. “My aim is to watch players I do not know very well, and that will help me choose the squad for official competitions.”

Brazil’s project, he said, would combine established players with emerging talent. “We have a great generation of players who took part in the 2018, 2022 and 2026 World Cups,” he added.

Ancelotti said the Brazilian Football Confederation was working towards a carefully managed transition, with the Copa America 2028 and the 2030 World Cup among the key targets.

“We are working to build a new generation of players,” he said. “We have a solid foundation gained from the World Cup, and we are now focusing on preparing for the 2028 Copa America and the 2030 World Cup.”

He also revealed the scale of the scouting operation being conducted by his coaching staff.

“Every week, we monitor between 60 and 70 players who are eligible to join the national team,” Ancelotti said. “We look everywhere: in Europe, Russia and Saudi Arabia. Brazilian players are everywhere, and our job is to make sure we do not overlook any talent.”
