Carling Knockout semi-final draw: Kaizer Chiefs face Sundowns as Pirates meet Stellenbosch
The Carling Knockout semi-final draw has paired Mamelodi Sundowns with Kaizer Chiefs, while defending champions Orlando Pirates will play Stellenbosch FC.
The draw means Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs will not meet at the last-four stage of the competition.
Mamelodi Sundowns reached the semi-finals on Tuesday, followed by Orlando Pirates on Saturday. Kaizer Chiefs completed the line-up on Sunday by beating Siwelele.
Stellenbosch FC’s quarter-final against AmaZulu in Cape Town was decided in the closing seconds, with a penalty from Sinoxolo Kwayiba sending the Maroons through.
Stellenbosch opened the scoring four minutes before the half-hour mark. Raoul Daniels delivered a precise cross from the right which found Chumani Butsaka, who volleyed the ball into the bottom corner.
AmaZulu responded in the 33rd minute. Athini Maqokolo advanced down the right before picking out Mlondi Mbanjwa, who got past Given Msimango and finished off the post to level the match.
Mbanjwa had an opportunity to put his side ahead early in the second half after another run from Maqokolo. The winger moved inside and set up Mbanjwa, but his team-mate struck his effort wide.
Stellenbosch struggled to find their rhythm after the interval and made a change from the bench, replacing Daniels with Daniel Matsheke.
Arthur Zwane’s side continued to create the more promising chances, but suffered a late setback when Kwayiba converted from the penalty spot in the final seconds before full-time.
The penalty was awarded after Taariq Fielies was penalised for handball, allowing the Maroons to secure their place in the last four.
The semi-final fixtures are:
Mamelodi Sundowns v Kaizer Chiefs
Stellenbosch FC v Orlando Pirates
