Cape Town City sign former Stellenbosch striker Cheswyn Philander from Milford FC

Cape Town City have completed the signing of Cape Town-born striker Cheswyn Philander after his impressive loan spell at newly promoted Betway Premiership side Milford FC.

The 22-year-old forward joins City following a season in which he scored seven goals for Milford and helped Xanti Pupuma’s team secure promotion to the top flight via the PSL promotion playoffs.

City confirmed the deal on Friday morning, unveiling Philander as their latest attacking recruit ahead of the new campaign.

In announcing the move, the club highlighted both his local roots and his nickname, posting: “From the Mother City, for the Mother City

“We are delighted to announce the signing of Cape Town-born striker, Cheswyn Philander.

No contract length or fee details were disclosed.

Cape Town-developed forward returns home

Philander, who grew up in Cape Town, began his professional career with local club Ubuntu FC before being picked up by Stellenbosch FC.

He initially joined Stellenbosch FC’s reserve ranks and progressed through their system before earning promotion to the first team in 2025.

Last season, Stellenbosch sent him on loan to Milford, where he became a key figure in their push for top-flight football. His seven goals were instrumental as Milford navigated the PSL/promotion playoffs to clinch a place in the Betway Premiership.

Philander’s most recent registration was with Milford FC, who will feature in the top division in the upcoming season after that successful promotion campaign.

City move adds to attacking options

The transfer marks a return to his home city for Philander, who will now compete for a place in Cape Town City’s forward line as the club prepare for the new campaign.

City, who compete in South Africa’s top flight, have not provided further details on how Philander will be integrated into their squad, but the signing underlines their intent to add young, locally developed talent to their attacking options.

The move also caps a rapid rise for the striker, who has climbed from Ubuntu FC to Stellenbosch FC’s reserves, into their first team and now onto a permanent deal with one of the Mother City’s leading clubs in the space of just a few seasons.
