Emil Witbooi on the radar of Orlando Pirates

Cape Town City chairman John Comitis has confirmed that discussions were held with Orlando Pirates over a potential transfer for highly rated attacking midfielder Emil Witbooi, amid growing interest in the teenager’s services.

According to reports, the Soweto giants explored the possibility of signing the 18-year-old as they assessed their options for strengthening their attacking department during the transfer window. Pirates were reportedly looking for a creative replacement for Relebohile Mofokeng, who joined Belgian side Royale Union Saint-Gilloise.

Witbooi emerged as a potential target for the Buccaneers, with his technical ability, creativity and attacking instincts making him an attractive option as the club considered its plans for the future.

Comitis’ confirmation of the discussions indicates that Pirates’ interest went beyond mere speculation, although an agreement was not reached. Cape Town City were reluctant to rush into a deal for the youngster, reflecting their desire to manage his development carefully rather than part ways with one of their most promising talents prematurely.

The Citizens believe that Witbooi could benefit significantly from continuing his development at the club, where he would have the opportunity to gain experience and mature before considering a move to a bigger stage.

The Cape Town academy graduate is regarded as one of South Africa’s exciting emerging prospects, having attracted attention for his technical quality, dribbling ability and understanding of the game. His capacity to operate in attacking areas and create opportunities for teammates has contributed to his growing reputation.

His involvement with South Africa’s youth national teams has further strengthened his profile, providing him with opportunities to develop at international level while gaining valuable experience against players from other countries.

For Orlando Pirates, the reported pursuit of Witbooi reflects their interest in identifying young players capable of strengthening the squad over the long term. However, replacing a player of Mofokeng’s creative influence would be a significant task, and Witbooi’s potential appears to have made him one of the options considered by the Soweto club.

Cape Town City, meanwhile, remain keen to ensure that the teenager’s development follows a path that serves both his long-term ambitions and the club’s interests. Rather than sanctioning an immediate departure, the club believes continued progress with the Citizens could help him become an even more attractive prospect to clubs in South Africa and abroad.

Although the discussions with Pirates have not resulted in a confirmed transfer, Witbooi’s emergence as a reported target for one of the country’s leading clubs underlines his growing reputation in South African football.

For now, his immediate future remains at Cape Town City, where the 18-year-old will be looking to build on his potential, gain further experience and strengthen his case for a move to a bigger stage when the right opportunity arises.
