World Cup 2026: Devastating blow as Canada lose Marcelo Flores and recall Jayden Nelson
Canada have been forced into a late squad change ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after winger Marcelo Flores was ruled out of the tournament with a serious knee injury, prompting Jayden Nelson’s return to the national team setup.
Soccer Canada confirmed on Tuesday that Flores will miss the competition after suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during club action for Mexican side Tigres UANL.
The injury represents a significant setback for both player and country at a crucial stage of Canada’s preparations for the World Cup. Flores, 22, sustained the injury on 30 May during a CONCACAF Champions League match.
The winger subsequently underwent surgery on Friday, 5 June, ending any hopes of participating in the tournament.
The Georgetown, Ontario-born attacker had been expected to play a role in Canada’s campaign, but his recovery period means he will be unavailable for the competition.
Canada have moved quickly to fill the vacancy, naming Jayden Nelson as Flores’ replacement in the squad.
The 23-year-old winger from Brampton, Ontario, was initially omitted from the final 26-man roster.
However, he remained with the national team after being one of three players cut from the original selection who continued training with the squad.
That decision has now proved important, allowing Nelson to step directly into the team following Flores’ withdrawal.
Nelson had been involved in Canada’s preparations in Charlotte at the end of May and made an impression during the camp.
He also found the net in Canada’s 2-0 warm-up victory over Uzbekistan, strengthening his case for inclusion should changes become necessary.
His return gives head coach Jesse Marsch another attacking option as Canada prepare for their World Cup campaign.
Nelson arrives at the tournament having featured for Austin FC in Major League Soccer this season.
In 10 league appearances, he has scored two goals and provided an attacking presence for the club.
At international level, he has already accumulated valuable experience with the Canadian national team.
Nelson has made 14 appearances for Canada, starting three matches and scoring three goals.
His pace and attacking qualities are expected to help offset the loss of Flores, whose injury leaves a notable gap in the squad.
Canada enter the World Cup as one of the tournament’s co-host nations and secured automatic qualification.
Expectations remain high as the team prepares to begin its campaign in Group B.
Their opening match is scheduled for 12 June against Bosnia.
Canada will then continue their group-stage campaign against Qatar and Switzerland as they seek a place in the knockout rounds.
While Flores’ absence is an undeniable disappointment for the squad, Canada’s coaching staff have acted swiftly to ensure they maintain depth in attacking areas.
For Nelson, the call-up completes a remarkable turnaround.
Having initially missed out on the final squad, he now finds himself preparing to board the plane to the World Cup and represent his country on football’s biggest stage.
The change comes at an unfortunate moment for Flores, whose focus will now shift towards rehabilitation and recovery following surgery.
For Canada, attention turns to the tournament itself, with Nelson given the opportunity to contribute as the team prepares for its Group B challenge.
Jesse Marsch’s side will hope the winger’s recent form and confidence can provide an immediate boost as Canada begin their quest for a successful World Cup campaign despite the loss of one of their attacking players.
