Zambia Clinch U-17 AFCON Spot After Impressive Win Over Uganda
Zambia’s Under-17 national team has officially secured a place in the final phase of the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament following a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Uganda in Kampala. The result sees Zambia progress with a 4-1 aggregate win, having already triumphed 2-0 in the first leg.
Led by coach Chris Kaunda, the young Chipolopolo showcased resilience and discipline, overcoming both their opponents and the challenging conditions in which the match was held. Reports indicate that the team faced substandard facilities during their stay in Uganda, but that did not deter them from delivering a strong performance on the pitch.
Rising star Patson Daka was the standout player of the match, netting both goals for Zambia. His first came in the 20th minute, giving the visitors an early advantage, before doubling the lead with a composed finish in the 67th minute. Uganda pulled one back just four minutes later through an Alex Komakech penalty, but it wasn’t enough to change the outcome.
Zambia’s qualification marks a significant achievement for the nation’s youth football programme, as they become the first team to book their spot in the final tournament through on-field results. The 2015 U-17 Africa Cup of Nations will be held from February 15 to March 1.
The victory not only highlights the team’s growing strength but also reflects the promising talent emerging from Zambian football, with players like Daka already drawing attention for their skill and composure under pressure.
With qualification now sealed, the focus for Kaunda and his coaching staff will shift to preparing the squad for the continental stage, where they will face the best teams in Africa.
