Madjid Bougherra Bids Emotional Farewell to Algerian National Team
Madjid “Boogy” Bougherra had hoped to cap off his illustrious international career with a triumphant Africa Cup of Nations title. However, Algeria’s 3-1 quarter-final defeat to Ivory Coast on Sunday dashed those hopes and marked the end of an era.
The central defender, who earned 70 caps over a remarkable ten-year tenure with the Fennecs, announced his retirement from international football with heartfelt emotion.
“After 11 years of happiness with the Algerian team, I think it’s time to say goodbye,” said Bougherra, 32, acknowledging the close of a distinguished chapter.
His contributions have secured him a place among Algeria’s football legends alongside names like Mustapha Zitouni, Fodil Megharia, and the renowned Kourichi-Guendouz pairing.
Fellow Algerian Rafik Saïfi praised Bougherra’s dedication:
“He’s a warrior who gave his all to his country. He loves his country, he doesn’t think twice. He’s gone down in world football history. Algerians won’t forget him. He’s a human being, he’s a bit sentimental. He’s a son of a good family. But on the pitch, he doesn’t give up.”
Though his talent attracted interest from clubs such as Bordeaux, Marseille, and Paris Saint-Germain, Bougherra spent the bulk of his club career in Scotland with Glasgow Rangers, where he won the Scottish Premier League three consecutive times (2009, 2010, and 2011).
Reflecting on his decision, Bougherra added:
“You have to know when to leave and turn the page. I really enjoyed it, but I’ll have one more friendly match in March to finish off with my teammates.”
As fans bid farewell to a true stalwart, the focus now shifts to who will lift the CAN trophy this year.
