CAN (F) Namibia 2014: Algeria Coach Chih Confident Ahead of Tournament

Algeria Drawn in Tough Group for Women’s Africa Cup of Nations

Algeria’s women’s national football team faces a challenging road ahead in the upcoming Africa Women’s Cup of Nations, following a tough group stage draw for the tournament, which will be hosted by Namibia from 11 to 25 October.

The Fennecs Dames have been placed in a formidable group alongside South Africa, Ghana and Cameroon—three of the continent’s most experienced and competitive sides.

Speaking from Abidjan, where he is currently leading a training camp for young women’s football coaches, Algeria head coach Azzedine Chih acknowledged the daunting task ahead but expressed confidence in his team’s determination.

“We have inherited a very difficult group with formidable and experienced teams,” Chih admitted. “We know that our mission is going to be complicated, but we will fight and defend our chances bravely.”

Chih also praised the progress his team has made in recent months, highlighting the players’ motivation and growth since qualifying for the continental tournament.

“We have a young team, but one that has progressed a lot. The players have gained confidence since qualifying for the CAN. They are motivated and want to honour the country,” he said.

The stakes are high, as the top three finishers at this year’s Africa Cup of Nations will earn qualification to the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Canada. Algeria, who are aiming for their first World Cup appearance, will be looking to defy the odds and secure one of those coveted spots.

“We will play our best to try to secure one of the top three qualifying places for the Women’s World Cup scheduled for next year in Canada,” Chih added.

The national squad is scheduled to resume preparations on 13 August in Algiers, as they begin the final stretch of their build-up to the competition.
