The first round of CAN 2013 concluded on Wednesday with Togo’s qualification for the quarter-finals, but it was marked by a relatively lower goal tally compared to the previous edition. A total of 49 goals were scored, in contrast to the 61 goals recorded in the same period in the previous tournament. Group D, consisting of Ivory Coast, Togo, Tunisia, and Algeria, led in terms of goals with a total of 15, followed by Group C with 12, and Groups A and B with 11 each.
The top scorer of the first round is Burkinabè player Alain Traoré, who netted three goals. Following closely are Siyabonga Sangweni (South Africa), Gervinho, Yaya Touré (Ivory Coast), Emmanuel Emenike, Victor Moses (Nigeria), and Dieumerci Mbokani (DR Congo), each with two goals to their name.
The fastest goal of the competition was scored by Dieumerci Mbokani in the 3rd minute of the DR Congo-Mali match. Togolese player Womé Dové secured the latest goal in the 90+19th minute against Algeria. Out of the nine penalties awarded, six were successfully converted into goals.
