CAN 2027 qualifying: Rwanda claim historic 2-1 win over Cape Verde

Rwanda beat Cape Verde 2-1 in Praia to secure their first victory over the Blue Sharks and make it two wins from two at the start of their CAN 2027 qualifying campaign.

Cape Verde had recovered from conceding the opening goal by equalising before half-time, but they were unable to protect a point in front of their home supporters as Rwanda scored again to take all three points.

The result ends Rwanda’s wait for a first win against Cape Verde. Their previous meetings had produced two draws and one defeat.

The victory is another significant step for the Amavubi, who had begun their Group K campaign with a win against Liberia. Rwanda’s perfect start puts them among the serious contenders for qualification from the group.

Cape Verde, by contrast, have suffered back-to-back defeats. The Blue Sharks lost to Mali in Bamako in their opening match before being beaten at home by Rwanda, leaving them under early pressure ahead of the next international break.

It has been a difficult start to the campaign for Humberto Bettencourt and his side, who must quickly recover if they are to avoid damaging their prospects of reaching CAN 2027.
