Claude Le Roy, the current head coach of Togo and one of the most experienced figures in African football, knows the Africa Cup of Nations better than almost anyone. Having led six different national teams in nine AFCON tournaments, the French technician has built a unique relationship with the competition, which is set to kick off this year in June. A true veteran of the African game, Le Roy has once again shared his thoughts on the upcoming tournament and, in particular, on the teams he believes are best placed to lift the 2019 trophy.

Drawing on decades of experience, Le Roy believes that the key factor in deciding the next African champion will be the quality of the goalkeepers. In his view, the teams with the strongest men between the posts will have a decisive advantage in a competition often defined by fine margins, tactical discipline, and high-pressure moments.

“For the first time in a very long time, Senegal has a superb goalkeeper,” Le Roy explained, referring to Edouard Mendy. The former Rennes shot-stopper has been enjoying an outstanding rise and, for Le Roy, provides Senegal with a level of security that could make the difference in crucial matches. The Senegalese squad, already rich in talent, now appears more balanced than in previous editions.

Le Roy also pointed to Morocco as a serious contender. According to him, the Atlas Lions possess both quality and experience, and he highlighted the influence of their coach, Hervé Renard. “There’s Morocco, and I think Hervé Renard has what it takes to win a third AFCON with a third different team,” he said, underlining his respect for the French coach’s track record in African competitions.

Cameroon, the defending champions, were another of his natural favorites. “Cameroon, because they have Onana, who’s having an exceptional season with Ajax, and Cameroon is still Cameroon,” Le Roy noted. His words reflect the enduring aura surrounding the Indomitable Lions, a nation that, regardless of form, is always feared at AFCON thanks to its history, mentality, and ability to rise in major tournaments.

While outlining these contenders, Le Roy also acknowledged the special case of Egypt. As hosts of the competition, the Pharaohs will enjoy the backing of their supporters and familiar conditions, factors that traditionally weigh heavily in African tournaments. For that reason, he believes Egypt must be counted among the leading favorites.

However, the French coach was more reserved about Tunisia’s chances. Although he recognizes the quality of the Carthage Eagles, he does not see them going all the way. “Tunisia also has a good team, but I don’t see them winning the cup,” he stated.

Le Roy broadened his analysis by mentioning several other nations capable of making a deep run. Algeria, he said, has “enormous potential” but will need to put all the pieces together to truly succeed. Ivory Coast impressed him with their attacking power, while Nigeria and DR Congo were also cited as teams “built to win the title.” In total, he identified seven or eight strong candidates, illustrating just how open and competitive the 2019 edition promises to be.

Finally, Le Roy allowed himself a more personal note. Despite being unable to qualify Togo for the tournament, he expressed a wish to see Kenya perform well, largely because they are coached by Sébastien Migné, his former assistant. It was a reminder that beyond predictions and favorites, the Africa Cup of Nations remains a competition of stories, surprises, and deep personal connections for those who know it best.
