The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) will be without one of their star players, Yannick Bolasie, for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt, a development that has shocked fans and raised concerns within the Leopards’ camp. The Everton winger, a key figure in the national team’s attack, has been ruled out due to his physical condition. After consulting with the Leopards’ medical staff, Bolasie determined that he is not yet fully fit to participate in the tournament and opted to focus on treatment during this international break to ensure a strong return for the upcoming club season.
The news, announced on Friday evening, sent ripples through Congolese football. Bolasie’s presence in the team had been expected, and his absence leaves a significant void in the Leopards’ lineup. Known for his pace, dribbling ability, and creativity on the left wing, the Everton forward has been a vital asset for the DRC during qualification campaigns and previous tournaments. His withdrawal marks the second consecutive Africa Cup of Nations that Bolasie will miss, following a long-term injury that sidelined him during the 2017 edition in Gabon.
The situation initially created some confusion and frustration among teammates and supporters. However, the Congolese Football Federation (FECOFA) moved quickly to clarify the circumstances. Constant Omari Selemani, President of FECOFA, explained that Bolasie was never excluded from the squad but had voluntarily stepped back due to his injury. Omari assured fans that misunderstandings had been resolved and that Bolasie is expected to rejoin training sessions later this weekend. “Bolasie created a situation that caused some misunderstanding and tension among his teammates, but everything has now calmed down. He is expected back at training this evening,” Omari stated.
Despite the setback, the Leopards remain focused on their preparations for the Africa Cup of Nations. They are currently holding a training camp in Marbella, Spain, and will play two friendly matches before departing for Egypt. The first match is scheduled for Sunday, June 9, against Burkina Faso, followed by a second and final friendly against Kenya on June 11. These games will provide the coaching staff with opportunities to finalize the 23-man squad and test tactical approaches ahead of the tournament.
The DRC’s opening group-stage fixtures are challenging, beginning with a match against Uganda’s Skulls on June 22, followed by a showdown with host nation Egypt on June 26, and concluding with a clash against Zimbabwe’s Warriors on June 30. Bolasie’s absence will require other players to step up in the attack, increasing the responsibility on seasoned internationals and emerging talents to fill the gap and lead the Leopards offensively.
While fans will miss seeing Bolasie on the pitch in Egypt, his decision to prioritize recovery demonstrates his commitment to both national and club responsibilities. The hope remains that once fully fit, he will return stronger and ready to make an impact in future competitions, ensuring that the DRC maintains its competitive edge on the continental stage.
