Cameroon to Face Mauritania Without Injured Choupo-Moting
The Indomitable Lions of Cameroon will have to do without Eric-Maxim Choupo-Moting for their upcoming 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Mauritania.
The Schalke 04 midfielder is suffering from a knee injury that has sidelined him in recent weeks. After discussions between head coach Volker Finke and the club’s medical team, the decision was made to allow the player a three-week recovery period for in-depth treatment.
“The national coach, Volker Finke, also went to see his protégé at his club. And in consultation with the medical staff of the Indomitable Lions, it was agreed that Choupo will rest for three weeks for in-depth treatment,” said Vincent de Paul Atangana, press officer of the Cameroonian Football Federation, via Camfoot.com and relayed by Afrik.com.
As a result, Choupo-Moting will miss not only the match against Mauritania, but also the friendly fixtures against Burkina Faso (June 6) and DR Congo (June 9).
The absence of one of their key attacking midfielders is a blow for Cameroon, but the team will look to begin their qualifying campaign on a strong note despite the setback.
