AFCON 2015 Qualifiers: Uganda Eye Historic Qualification Against Equatorial Guinea
Kampala, Uganda – 19 November 2014
The Uganda Cranes are on the verge of a historic return to the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), and they need only a draw in their final qualifier against Equatorial Guinea to secure their place in next year’s tournament. If successful, Uganda will end a 32-year absence from the continental stage, a remarkable achievement for the Cranes and coach Micho Sredojevic.
The Serbian tactician has built a solid squad for this critical encounter, which will see the Cranes travel from Guinea to Morocco for the decisive clash. With qualification within their grasp, the Ugandan side is focused on delivering a performance that will see them make their long-awaited return to Africa’s premier football competition.
“We are confident, but we also know the importance of staying focused,” Sredojevic said ahead of the match. “Our aim is to get the job done, and we will take this one step at a time.”
The Cranes’ coach has entrusted a reliable and experienced team to secure the result they need. In goal, veteran Denis Onyango will be the last line of defence, while the back four will consist of Isaac Isinde, Godfrey Walusimbi, Savio Kabugo, and team captain Andy Mwesigwa.
In midfield, Geoffrey Kizito and William Kizito Luwaga will play pivotal roles, while the experienced Tonny Mawejje and Farouk Miya will provide creativity and attacking support. Up front, Geoffrey Massa will lead the charge alongside Brian Majwega, both of whom bring goal-scoring ability to the team.
The Cranes will be buoyed by the prospect of qualification, having already shown resilience and determination throughout the campaign. With a solid defensive unit and a midfield capable of controlling possession, Uganda will be aiming to capitalise on their opportunities against an Equatorial Guinea side that will be equally determined to make their mark.
Should Uganda secure the necessary point, it will mark a historic moment in the nation’s footballing history and a significant step forward under Sredojevic’s leadership. For the Cranes, this is more than just a match—it’s a chance to end decades of disappointment and return to the AFCON stage with pride.
The match will be played on Wednesday, with the result set to define Uganda’s destiny as they look to join the continent’s elite in Morocco next year.
