Uganda Arrives in Ghana Ahead of Africa Cup of Nations Qualifier
Uganda’s national football team, the Cranes, have arrived in Accra ahead of their opening qualifier against Ghana for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) scheduled in Morocco.
The team, led by a 25-member delegation headed by Darius Mugoye, departed from Entebbe International Airport on Sunday evening. The squad traveled via Ethiopian Airlines to Niamey, Niger, where they played a warm-up friendly against the local side, Mena, on Tuesday as part of their preparation.
Coach Milutin Sredojević faces a slight setback with the potential absence of midfielder Brian Majwega, who is currently sidelined due to a muscle injury. Meanwhile, striker Geoffrey Massa, who missed the friendly match, is expected to join the squad in Kumasi, Ghana, where the crucial qualifier will take place.
Following their stopover in Niger, the Ugandan team is scheduled to continue their journey to Accra on Thursday before moving on to Kumasi for final preparations.
The Cranes’ squad features an experienced lineup with Dennis Onyango and Robert Odongkara as goalkeepers. The defensive unit includes Denis Iguma, Godfrey Walusimbi, Savio Kabugo, Richard Kasagga, Isaac Isinde, and captain Andrew Mwesigwa.
In midfield, the team is bolstered by players such as Geoffrey Baba Kizito, Tonny Maweje, Aucho Khalid, Luwagga Kizito, Farouq Miya, and Moïse Oloya. The forward line includes Robert Sentongo, Hamis Kizza, Brian Umony, and Yunus Sentamu, all tasked with delivering attacking threats against a formidable Ghanaian side.
This qualifier represents a significant challenge for Uganda, as they seek to advance in the highly competitive AFCON tournament. Ghana, a footballing powerhouse in Africa, will be a tough opponent on home soil.
The Cranes’ preparations, including their friendly in Niamey, are crucial steps in building cohesion and match fitness ahead of the fixture.
