AFCON 2015 Qualifiers: Uganda Falters Again as Togo Seals Double Victory
Togo continued its revival in the AFCON 2015 qualifiers, defeating Uganda 1-0 for the second time in four days. The Matchday 4 clash in Lomé saw Serge Akakpo score the decisive goal—fittingly on his birthday—following a set-piece delivered by Serge Gakpé.
Despite the loss, Uganda’s coach Micho Sredojevic praised his team’s effort and tactical discipline, particularly in the first half:
“I’m very happy with the way my players played. It was all about containing the opponent. That’s what we did in the first half.”
He added that tactical adjustments were made to exploit Togo’s advancing full-backs in the second half, but the execution fell short:
“We had chances that weren’t capitalized on. It’s cruel—we lacked concentration. We paid the price for our lack of high-level experience.”
Sredojevic remains optimistic, emphasizing the resilience of his team in a challenging group:
“We’re not out yet. We’re in a never-give-up mindset. Every match is a final.”
With Ghana’s 3-1 win over Guinea, the Black Stars lead the group on 8 points, followed by Togo (6 pts), Uganda (4 pts), and Guinea (4 pts). With two matches remaining, the fight for qualification remains wide open.
