Sudan Offers to Host 2015 AFCON Amid Morocco’s Ebola Concerns
As Morocco’s request to postpone the 2015 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) due to fears surrounding the Ebola virus remains under review, Sudan has stepped forward as a potential replacement host, should the North African nation ultimately pull out.
The development was widely reported on Monday in Khartoum, where rumors are growing about the country’s willingness to step in. Sudanese authorities have reportedly declared their readiness to host the continental tournament, a bold offer that adds to growing regional interest.
Morocco had cited concerns over “public gatherings involving affected countries” and formally asked the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to delay the event. However, CAF promptly responded:
“CAF has registered this request [from Morocco] and confirms that no changes are on the agenda for its competition and event calendar.”
The matter is expected to be addressed further at the CAF Executive Committee meeting scheduled for November 2.
In addition to Sudan, Gabon and Algeria have reportedly expressed interest in hosting the tournament if Morocco withdraws, according to Tunisian outlet Shems FM.
As the Ebola epidemic continues to create concern across the continent, CAF faces a difficult decision balancing health, logistics, and the integrity of the competition.
