Fair Play Recognition for Eric Mathoho Despite South Africa’s Missed Opportunity
Although Bafana Bafana were held to a 1-1 draw by Senegal in their second Group C match at the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations, South Africa found some solace in a Fair Play award received by defender Eric Mathoho.
The Kaizer Chiefs center-back delivered a solid performance throughout the game, despite South Africa’s inability to maintain their early lead. Bafana Bafana opened the scoring just two minutes into the second half through Oupa Manyisa, who converted Thuso Phala’s low cross at the far post—one of several dangerous counter-attacks that shook the Senegalese defense.
Despite their energetic play and Mathoho’s consistent efforts at the back, the South Africans couldn’t hold off the Teranga Lions, who equalized through Kara Mbodji’s powerful header in the 56th minute.
Though the draw leaves South Africa in a difficult position in the group, Mathoho’s Fair Play award is a personal highlight in an otherwise frustrating outing.
