Vincent Enyeama Withdraws from Nigeria Squad Amid Family Issues Ahead of CAN Qualifiers
Lille goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama has left Nigeria’s national team training camp, citing serious family matters, just days before crucial 2015 Africa Cup of Nations (CAN) qualifiers.
The experienced shot-stopper, who was summoned by the Nigerian Football Federation, informed the coaching staff on Monday that he would be unable to join the squad. Speaking exclusively to colinudoh.com, Enyeama explained, “I spoke with the coach and told him that I couldn’t come. I have very important family commitments, and I have to be there.” He did not disclose further details about the nature of the issues.
Nigeria is preparing for back-to-back qualifiers, with a home clash against Congo on September 6, followed by an away fixture against South Africa on September 10. Enyeama’s absence will be keenly felt, as the goalkeeper also serves as the team captain and a vital presence in the squad.
Despite his current withdrawal, Enyeama insisted he remains committed to the national team. “I am still available for the upcoming matches and will do my best for my country,” he affirmed.
The goalkeeper’s decision has also sparked speculation regarding his international future. After Nigeria’s exit from the 2014 FIFA World Cup, many assumed Enyeama had retired from international football. However, the player clarified his position, saying, “I never said I no longer wanted to play for the national team. I only said I would discuss it with my family members, which is the normal thing to do.”
Enyeama, 31, has been a cornerstone of Nigerian football for over a decade, earning over 70 caps and playing a crucial role in Nigeria’s successes on the continental stage. His leadership and shot-stopping abilities have often been credited with inspiring the Super Eagles during major tournaments.
With the CAN qualifiers fast approaching, Nigeria’s coaching staff will now have to make adjustments to compensate for the absence of their captain. The team will be looking to maintain their strong record and secure qualification for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
