CAN 2015 Qualifiers: Togo Aims to Confirm Momentum Against Uganda
The Hawks of Togo delighted their supporters last Saturday with a crucial 1-0 win over Uganda in Kampala during the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers. The narrow but vital victory revived the team’s hopes of securing a place in the final tournament in Morocco and lifted spirits within the Togolese camp.
With Group E still tightly contested, Togo must now consolidate their momentum on home soil. This Wednesday at Kégué Stadium, the Togolese will look to confirm their resurgence against a Ugandan Cranes side licking its wounds and possibly weakened by key absences.
In a show of unity and faith, the Togolese national team, along with the coaching staff, federation officials, and supporters, participated in interfaith prayers on Tuesday. Catholic mass, Muslim prayers, and a Protestant service were all held to seek divine favor ahead of this decisive clash.
Coach Tchanilé Tchakala is expected to rely on the same starting eleven that secured victory in Kampala. Key players such as captain Emmanuel Adebayor, Mawouna Amevor, Serge Gakpé, Serge Akakpo, and Jacques-Alaixys Romao will once again feature prominently. Goalkeeper Donou Kokou, the hero of the last match, remains in superb form and could once again be the difference-maker.
Statistically, history favors the Hawks. In four previous encounters with Uganda, Togo has never lost, registering two wins (both away) and two draws. With confidence high and the home crowd behind them, Togo has a real opportunity to climb the Group E standings and edge closer to qualification—provided they remain efficient in front of goal.
