Patrick Mboma: “Algeria Are the Favorites for AFCON 2015”
Former Cameroon international and current Canal+ consultant Patrick Mboma has weighed in on the contenders for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations. A seasoned veteran of the tournament himself, the ex-Indomitable Lion believes Algeria are the team to beat in Equatorial Guinea.
“Algeria is the big favorite in this competition,” Mboma declared. “This team is made up of players who had a great World Cup. They gave Germany a hard time and continued their momentum with an exceptional qualifying campaign, winning their first five matches.”
Mboma praised the Fennecs’ squad depth and experience. “The Algerian national team is made up of players who play in major leagues and are regular starters at their clubs. This is a team that could dominate the continent for many years to come. I say dominate, not necessarily win every competition.”
Despite his roots, Mboma is less optimistic about his home country’s chances. “Cameroon are among the outsiders, like Ghana and Ivory Coast. There are also dangerous teams like the DRC, Cape Verde, and Congo. And let’s not forget Burkina Faso, finalists of the last edition, who could surprise again. Tunisia, too, has tactical discipline, even if I have less belief in them this year.”
On the tournament’s rushed organization following Morocco’s withdrawal due to Ebola fears, Mboma expressed concern. “Equatorial Guinea had very little time to prepare. It will be complicated—hosting the teams, the public, the press, and the technicians. Even in terms of broadcasting, the technical crews on the ground will struggle to move their equipment properly.”
As the competition kicks off, all eyes will be on Algeria—and on how Equatorial Guinea handles the immense logistical challenge of hosting Africa’s premier football tournament with only two months of preparation.
