CAN 2015 Qualifiers – Egypt vs Senegal: Cissé Aims for Redemption in Crucial Clash
Senegal’s qualification campaign for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations reaches a pivotal moment this Saturday, as they travel to Cairo to face Egypt in what many are calling the defining match of Group G.
Currently second with 7 points, Papiss Cissé and the Lions of Teranga are one point ahead of their hosts. The stakes are clear: avoid defeat to keep qualification hopes intact, or risk missing out on the prestigious continental tournament. Egypt, on the other hand, must win to stay in the race, adding intensity to an already high-pressure encounter.
“The pressure is on everyone, because it’s a crucial match,” admitted Newcastle striker Papiss Cissé. “But this pressure will be positive. It should allow us to get the three points of victory.”
Missed Opportunity vs Tunisia Still Hurts
After a promising start to the campaign — including a 2-0 win over Egypt and Botswana, plus a draw against Tunisia — the momentum faltered. In Rades, Senegal were punished by Tunisia in injury time (1-0), a bitter pill for a team that had largely controlled the game.
“We lacked concentration in the final minutes,” Cissé reflected. “That must not happen again. This game will be decided on focus from start to finish, solidarity, and efficiency. We need to be ruthless.”
Attack Under Scrutiny
Senegal boasts a strong midfield and a blisteringly fast attack, with the likes of Diafra Sakho (West Ham) and Cissé leading the line. But goal conversion has become a concern.
“We lacked efficiency, but that’s football,” said Cissé. “You can dominate a match and still lose. Against Tunisia, we saw that. We know the responsibility lies with us, the attackers. The coach is doing his part. The midfield and defense are solid — now we must step up and deliver.”
Cissé’s words reflect the self-awareness and hunger within the Senegalese camp. With a must-win game for Egypt and a must-not-lose game for Senegal, the pressure is immense — but so is the belief.
“We all know we have to be more decisive,” Cissé concluded. “We’re working hard. For the next two matches, we hope success will smile on us.”
Group G Situation Before Matchday 5:
Tunisia: 10 points
Senegal: 7 points
Egypt: 6 points
Botswana: 0 points
A win would see Senegal through to the AFCON. A draw keeps them in control. A loss? It could mean the end — and Egypt rising from the ashes.
