Malawi Confident Ahead of Crucial Showdown with Algeria
As the third matchday of the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers approaches, Malawi is preparing for a pivotal home clash against Algeria this Saturday at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre. Tied with Mali on three points in Group B, the Flames trail group leaders Algeria, who have a perfect six points.
Despite the daunting task of facing a team that impressed at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, the Malawians are optimistic about pulling off a surprise at home.
Christopher Mdolo, general manager of the national team, acknowledged Algeria’s strength but emphasized Malawi’s resilience:
“We will be facing a World Cup player and a great team. Saturday’s match will obviously be difficult for us, but the players are aware and ready to take on the challenge.”
Mdolo underlined Malawi’s impressive home record, citing that teams like Nigeria, Ghana, and Ivory Coast have all struggled in Blantyre:
“We are unbeaten at home for five years. On paper, Algeria is the favorite, but we will have our say in this match.”
With home support and a strong recent home unbeaten record, Malawi is hoping to defy expectations and take a big step toward AFCON qualification.
