AFCON 2015: HERVÉ RENARD FUMING AFTER ANOTHER DRAW – DECISIVE CLASH WITH CAMEROON LOOMS
Ivory Coast coach Hervé Renard could not hide his frustration after his team was held to a second consecutive 1-1 draw, this time by Mali, following a similar result against Guinea. The Elephants are now under pressure to win their final Group D match against Cameroon to have any hope of reaching the quarter-finals of the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations.
But the French coach’s anger wasn’t directed at his players — rather, at the match officials.
“I won’t say anything, but I wasn’t angry with my players. I think you can understand why I’m angry with the refereeing,” said Renard. “Now it’s too late to talk about that… I don’t like to create controversy after the fact, it could lead to a suspension. I need to stay calm.”
Renard did, however, find positives in his team’s performance:
“I saw some very good things today, more than in the first game. Unfortunately, we were behind early in the game. Once again, we struggled early on. If you look at the stats, [Mali] didn’t have many shots on target.”
His frustration stands in contrast to his earlier praise for the tournament’s organization and atmosphere, which he had previously described as excellent.
With everything on the line next Wednesday, the final group clash between Ivory Coast and Cameroon promises high drama and intensity.
