AFCON 2015 Qualifiers: Group B Preview – Algeria, Mali, Ethiopia, Malawi Begin Campaign
The 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers are now in full swing, with Group B set to kick off today. Featuring Algeria, Mali, Ethiopia, and Malawi, the group promises competitive football and intriguing storylines as each team begins its quest for a place in next year’s finals.

Algeria: Eyes on the Title
Algeria enter the qualifiers as the favourites, following an impressive showing at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. Ranked 24th in the world and top in Africa by FIFA, the Fennecs are determined to carry that momentum into the continental scene. While coach Vahid Halilhodžić departed after the World Cup, new boss Christian Gourcuff inherits a well-balanced and cohesive squad.
With players like Yacine Brahimi in top form, Algeria are tipped to dominate Group B. Gourcuff has made minimal changes, keeping the same core that captured the admiration of many during the World Cup. With their sights set on lifting the continental trophy, failing to qualify would be a major upset.
Mali: Seeking a Long-Awaited Final

Mali, bronze medalists at both the 2012 and 2013 tournaments, are hoping to go one better this time around. Despite inconsistent results in 2014, including a win over China followed by four games without victory, there is cautious optimism. Veteran Seydou Keita continues to inspire, while new coach Henryk Kasperczak aims to steer the Eagles to their first-ever AFCON final.
Consistency and the ability to perform in key matches will be crucial if Mali are to progress from a tricky group.
Ethiopia: Back with Style

Ethiopia’s vibrant playing style won them plenty of admirers in 2013, even if they fell short in the group stage. They narrowly missed a spot in the 2014 World Cup, losing to eventual qualifiers Nigeria in the play-offs. With Portuguese coach Mariano Barreto at the helm, the Walyas Antelopes have prepared intensively, including a training camp in Brazil.
If Algeria or Mali slip up, Ethiopia have the talent and energy to take advantage and mount a serious challenge for qualification.
Malawi: Underdogs with Potential
Malawi return to the AFCON scene for the first time since 2010, where they exited in the group stages. Though seen as outsiders, the Flames showed they are not to be underestimated by eliminating Benin in the preliminary round.
With a squad drawn largely from domestic players, Malawi will need discipline and resilience to trouble the group favourites. Their ambition will be to spring a surprise or two along the way.
