Cyriac Returns to Ivory Coast Squad with Eyes Set on DRC Clash
Kinshasa — Ivorian striker Gohi Bi Cyriac says he is determined to seize his opportunity as he rejoins the national team for a crucial Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The Anderlecht forward, who has impressed in the early stages of the club season, has been recalled to the Elephants squad after a prolonged absence. Now under the stewardship of coach Hervé Renard, Ivory Coast will take on the Leopards in Kinshasa in the third round of the 2015 AFCON qualifiers.
Cyriac, speaking to local media ahead of the clash, expressed his delight at being back with the national team and his determination to earn a permanent place.
“It’s nice. It shows that I’m not forgotten,” said Cyriac. “But the most important thing is not just being in the national team—it’s showing that we have what it takes to stay.”
The 24-year-old will face familiar opposition in Kinshasa, including his club teammates Chancel Mbemba and Nicaise Kudimbana, who feature in the DRC squad.
“Congo is a good team. They’ve started these qualifiers well. I know a few of their players from Anderlecht. They’ve told me what to expect—it will be a tough game, especially with the home crowd behind them. But I feel confident we’ll have the upper hand. We’re here to play a good match. The mission is difficult, but it’s not impossible.”
Cyriac’s return comes at a time of transition for the Elephants, who are adapting to life under new head coach Hervé Renard. The Frenchman, best known for guiding Zambia to an unlikely AFCON triumph in 2012, has been tasked with rejuvenating the Ivorian squad following recent disappointments on the continental stage.
Though Cyriac admitted he had no prior personal connection with Renard, he spoke highly of the coach’s approach since taking the reins.
“I didn’t know him personally before. But now I see that he’s a charismatic gentleman. He doesn’t joke around. He’s serious about his work, and I hope we’ll achieve good things with him.”
With the Elephants in a tightly contested Group D, Saturday’s fixture in Kinshasa could prove pivotal in their qualification bid. The team will be looking to improve on past performances and reassert themselves as one of Africa’s top footballing nations.
Cyriac, for his part, appears ready to play his role in that revival.
