Egypt Joins List of Potential Hosts for CAN 2015 Amid Ongoing Uncertainty
The fate of the 2015 African Cup of Nations (CAN) remains uncertain as the Confederation of African Football (CAF) continues to search for an alternative host, should Morocco formally withdraw over health concerns. A final decision is expected from CAF on November 2, but negotiations with several nations are already underway.
While South Africa and Algeria have officially declined to step in, Nigeria and Ghana have expressed their willingness to host the tournament. Now, Egypt has entered the conversation as a serious contender. Having successfully organized the competition in 2006, Egypt brings experience to the table.
According to Starafrica, Egypt’s Minister of Sports has declared the country’s readiness to take over the hosting duties. However, this offer is contingent on the approval of the Ministry of Health, as public health and safety remain a top priority in light of concerns surrounding the Ebola outbreak in West Africa — the same issue prompting Morocco’s hesitation.
With time running out, CAF is under pressure to finalize a host and avoid disruptions to Africa’s premier football competition. All eyes now turn to November 2, when a definitive ruling is expected.
