Ayanda Gcaba Replaces Injured Phungwayo in South Africa’s AFCON Squad
South Africa coach Shakes Mashaba has made a final change to his 2015 Africa Cup of Nations squad. Following an injury to defender Patrick Phungwayo during training last Friday, Ayanda Gcaba has been called up as his replacement.
Gcaba is set to arrive in Libreville on Tuesday, where Bafana Bafana is holding its training camp. He could be available for South Africa’s final warm-up match ahead of the tournament, scheduled for Wednesday against Mali.
South Africa has already played two preparatory matches:
A 1-0 win over Zambia
A 1-1 draw with Cameroon
Bafana Bafana faces a major challenge in Group C, widely considered the “group of death,” which includes:
Algeria
Ghana
Senegal
South Africa will be looking to Gcaba’s experience and defensive solidity as they aim to make a deep run in this highly competitive group.
