The first half of the semi-final between Mali and Nigeria in the African Cup of Nations (CAN) saw the Super Eagles take a commanding lead, leading 3-0 at the break. Despite the fast-paced nature of the match, with only around 5,000 spectators present at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban, Nigeria dominated the proceedings.
Mali initiated the first notable action of the game in the 6th minute, with a dangerous center from Tamboura, resulting in a corner. However, Nigeria responded swiftly, with Ideye’s attempt on goal saved by Malian goalkeeper Mamadou Samassa. In the 26th minute, Echiejile scored for Nigeria, taking advantage of defensive vulnerabilities in the Malian backline. The Super Eagles extended their lead in the 29th minute with Ideye finding the back of the net. Finally, in the 44th minute, Emenike’s free kick found the target, further solidifying Nigeria’s dominance.
The Super Eagles demonstrated efficiency in their attacking play, capitalizing on defensive lapses from the Malian side. Patrice Carteron, the coach of Mali, made changes to his lineup compared to the quarter-final, but Nigeria’s Stephen Keshi retained the same team that defeated Ivory Coast.
