Excluded from the qualifiers due to being the host country, South Africa is gearing up for the 2013 African Cup of Nations through a series of friendly matches. In September, Bafana Bafana is set to host two significant matches, one against the five-time world champions Brazil and the other against Mozambique. Recently, the coach of the rainbow nation, Gordon Igesund, unveiled the squad for these encounters. The selection predominantly features players from the South African first division (PSL), aligning with the familiar framework.
Notably, the return of Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Moeneeb Josephs and Crystal Palace striker Kagisho Dikgacoi is capturing attention. Josephs had previously announced his international retirement, expressing frustration at being infrequently called up during the Pisto Mosimane era. However, after a conversation with coach Gordon Igesund, Josephs conveyed his readiness to rejoin the national team and give his full commitment. Since Igesund’s appointment, the Orlando Pirates goalkeeper has formally communicated his return to international competition to the South African federation. Apart from these comebacks, the Bafana Bafana squad sees limited changes. The matter of the captain’s armband remains unresolved, with current holder Steven Pienaar (Everton) possibly facing displacement.
South Africa is scheduled to face Brazil in a friendly on September 7 in Sao Paulo, followed by a home match against Mozambique on September 11 for the second test match.
