The Ivory Coast national football team, known as the Elephants, is entering the 29th edition of the Africa Cup of Nations (CAN 2013) with high expectations. Despite being unfortunate finalists in the previous edition, the team is considered one of the strongest in Africa, featuring star players such as Didier Drogba, Salomon Kalou, the Touré brothers, and Gervinho.
According to the FIFA rankings, Ivory Coast holds the title of the best African team, adding to the pressure on the shoulders of coach Sabri Lamouchi as they approach their first match against Togo. Gervinho, the Arsenal attacking midfielder, expressed optimism for the upcoming challenge and emphasized the importance of securing a victory in the first match:
“The first match is always important. This determines the course that one can take in a major competition. We are all aware that to reassure ourselves and build up our confidence, we are somewhat obliged to beat the Togolese. There is no other alternative than victory. And, we are ready!”
