Camp Nou to host 2029 Champions League final as Barcelona’s famous European stage returns

The UEFA Champions League final will return to Camp Nou in 2029, with UEFA confirming that Barcelona’s home stadium will host the competition’s showpiece match for the first time in 30 years.

It will be the third occasion on which Camp Nou has staged the European Cup or Champions League final, following the 1989 and 1999 editions. The latter remains one of the most remarkable matches in the competition’s history.

The stadium first hosted the final on 24 May 1989, when Milan faced Steaua Bucharest in the European Cup.

Milan produced a dominant performance under manager Arrigo Sacchi, beating the Romanian side 4-0 in front of about 97,000 spectators. The goals were shared between Dutch forwards Ruud Gullit and Marco van Basten, who scored twice each.

The victory was a defining moment in Milan’s golden era, with the club going on to retain the trophy the following season.

However, the final played on 26 May 1999 is the match most closely associated with Camp Nou’s European history.

Bayern Munich took an early lead through Mario Basler and remained ahead until the closing stages. The German side also missed several chances to extend its advantage, as Manchester United appeared destined to leave Barcelona without the trophy.

The match changed dramatically in added time. Teddy Sheringham equalised before Ole Gunnar Solskjaer scored the winner moments later, completing a 2-1 victory for Manchester United and securing the club a historic Champions League triumph.

It was one of the most famous comebacks in the competition’s history. Sir Alex Ferguson described the moment as the greatest of his life, while Manchester United completed a historic treble that season.

There was also a striking connection between the two finalists and Barcelona, the club whose stadium hosted the match.

Barcelona had been drawn alongside Bayern Munich and Manchester United in a highly competitive group in the 1998-99 season. The Catalan side failed to reach the knockout stages, while the two clubs that advanced from that campaign eventually met in the final at Camp Nou.

UEFA records show that Barcelona’s campaign ended in the group stage, with Bayern Munich and Manchester United progressing to the final, where the English side prevailed in the closing minutes.

Thirty years after that extraordinary night, the Champions League final will return to Camp Nou in 2029. Barcelona will hope not merely to welcome the finalists, but to reach the showpiece themselves and give their supporters the chance to see the club compete for the trophy on home ground.
