Cameroonian forward Didier Lamkel Zé has expressed his enthusiasm regarding Marc Brys’ appointment as the head coach of the Indomitable Lions.
In a recent media appearance, Lamkel Zé aimed criticism at Rigobert Song, his former coach. The Metz winger, currently on loan from Hatayspor, lamented Song’s decision not to include him in the squad for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), where Cameroon exited in the round of 16.
Lamkel Zé, who has often faced Brys’ teams during his time in Belgium, welcomed the Belgian coach’s arrival.
“I am very happy that Marc Brys has been appointed. When I played in Belgium, I faced his teams several times, whether he was at Sint-Truiden or Leuven,” Lamkel Zé stated in an interview with his club FC Metz.
“He tried to recruit me for the clubs he coached, but unfortunately, it didn’t materialize.”
Despite being on the bench during FC Metz’s recent victory over RC Lens (2-1), Lamkel Zé, who has one appearance for the Indomitable Lions, understands that proximity to Brys does not guarantee a place in the national team.
“He knows me well, but that doesn’t mean my spot in the team is guaranteed,” Lamkel Zé clarified. “I know that if I perform well with FC Metz, he will consider calling me up, and I will do everything to make it happen again.”
Brys’ appointment has sparked hope and anticipation among Cameroonian players, with Lamkel Zé eager to impress for both his club and potentially earn a recall to the national team under the new leadership.
