Cameroon’s Karl Toko-Ekambi eyes return to national team after retirement

Cameroon’s forward Karl Toko-Ekambi is reportedly reconsidering his international retirement, hinting at a potential return to the Indomitable Lions’ lineup after stepping away from the national team earlier this year. The 32-year-old, who currently plays for Al Ettifaq in Saudi Arabia, announced his retirement from international duty following his fourth Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament, a decision he then described as the end of an era in his career.

In February, Toko-Ekambi took to social media to express his gratitude for representing his country, stating, “A fourth chapter of the Africa Cup of Nations closes, marking the end of a story.

Forever an Indomitable Lion.” The announcement came as a surprise to fans and signaled the conclusion of an impactful run with Cameroon’s national squad, during which he earned 62 caps and netted 14 goals.

Since Toko-Ekambi’s departure, efforts to encourage his return have been ongoing, largely led by Marc Brys, Cameroon’s head coach, who assumed the role after Rigobert Song.

The Belgian manager has reportedly been in regular contact with the striker, keen to see him don the green and red jersey once again.

Brys believes that Toko-Ekambi’s skill, experience, and leadership would be a valuable asset as the Indomitable Lions prepare for upcoming competitive fixtures, including the final rounds of qualification for the 2026 World Cup and the 2025 AFCON.

Despite the initial reluctance, sources close to the player suggest that Toko-Ekambi has been swayed by Brys’ efforts and is now re-evaluating his decision to retire.

The possibility of his return is generating excitement among Cameroon supporters, who have long regarded him as a reliable attacking force.

Known for his quick footwork, strong aerial presence, and goal-scoring ability, Toko-Ekambi played a key role in Cameroon’s recent international campaigns, helping the team navigate high-stakes tournaments and bringing an element of consistency to their forward line.

Since joining Al Ettifaq in Saudi Arabia’s Pro League, Toko-Ekambi has continued to perform at a high level, attracting attention for his sharp form and adapting well to the competitive environment in Saudi Arabia.

His current form is believed to be a significant factor in his reconsideration of international retirement, as he sees a potential return to the Indomitable Lions as an opportunity to contribute further to Cameroonian football while remaining at his peak.

Should he confirm his return, Toko-Ekambi will likely be an integral part of Cameroon’s efforts in the coming years.

The Indomitable Lions have a series of critical matches lined up, and the return of a player of his caliber could boost the squad’s chances in both continental and international competitions.

For Cameroonian football, Toko-Ekambi’s comeback would not only strengthen the team’s attacking depth but also add valuable experience, especially as they aim to qualify for another World Cup and compete in the AFCON.

While no official announcement has been made, fans are hopeful that his expected decision will bring renewed energy to Cameroon’s national team.

For Toko-Ekambi, a return to international football would symbolize not only a rekindled passion but a reaffirmation of his legacy with the Indomitable Lions.
