Vincent Aboubakar is edging closer to a move to Moroccan giants Wydad Casablanca, according to widespread reports in the Turkish and African press.
The experienced Cameroonian international has been without a club for over two months following the termination of his contract with Turkish outfit Hatayspor, where he scored eight goals and registered two assists in 28 appearances last season.
Now 33, the former captain of the Indomitable Lions appears to be attracting strong interest across several markets.
While his next destination has been the subject of speculation, Morocco has now emerged as the most likely next step in his career.
Aboubakar, who boasts 111 caps and 45 goals for Cameroon, had previously been linked with Qarabag FK in Azerbaijan.
The three-time defending Azerbaijani champions had reportedly entered into talks with the striker, hoping to secure his services ahead of their Champions League qualification campaign. However, no deal materialised from those discussions.
In a new twist, Moroccan heavyweights Wydad Casablanca have stepped into the frame. According to multiple sources, including the well-connected football insider account Micky Jnr, Wydad have made a concrete move to land the former Porto and Besiktas forward.
Turkish outlet Sakaryaspor even claims that both parties have reached an agreement on a two-year deal, though no official confirmation has come from the club or the player’s representatives.
This is not Wydad’s first attempt to lure Aboubakar to Casablanca. Last summer, the club had already expressed interest in signing him, viewing his pedigree and leadership qualities as a potential boost to their squad ahead of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.
However, the striker declined the offer at the time, reportedly still focused on re-establishing himself in Europe or Asia following a difficult spell in Turkey.
Despite that initial rejection, it appears Wydad have reignited their pursuit with fresh optimism. The club remains confident that Aboubakar’s extensive experience — including spells at FC Lorient, FC Porto, Besiktas, and Al-Nassr — could prove invaluable both on and off the pitch.
With time ticking before the start of the new season, Wydad may be hoping that the free-agent status of the Cameroonian will expedite negotiations.
The Moroccan side, known for its ambition and passionate support, is eager to bolster its attacking options following an inconsistent domestic campaign.
For Aboubakar, a move to Morocco could represent both a fresh challenge and an opportunity to rediscover his best form in a competitive league.
While there has yet to be an official statement from the player or Wydad Casablanca, all indications suggest that discussions are well advanced.
Should the deal be completed, it would mark the latest chapter in a career that has taken Aboubakar across France, Portugal, Turkey, and Saudi Arabia — and now potentially to one of North Africa’s most storied clubs.
