Cameroonian midfielder James Eto’o in advanced talks over Maccabi Netanya move
James Eto’o is in advanced negotiations to join Israeli Premier League side Maccabi Netanya, with discussions ongoing over a potential transfer from Bulgarian club CSKA Sofia before the close of the current window.
The 24-year-old, who is under contract with CSKA Sofia until 2027, is reportedly open to a new challenge after establishing himself as a key figure in the Bulgarian club’s midfield.
Eto’o’s versatility and technical ability have made him an attractive option for Maccabi Netanya, who are seeking to strengthen their squad with a high-quality midfield addition.
A three-year deal is believed to be under consideration, with the move expected to cost the Israeli club between €1 million and €1.5 million. Eto’o’s current market valuation, according to Transfermarkt, stands at €1.5 million.
The Cameroonian midfielder has been a regular in Bulgaria since 2021, following spells with French side FC Nantes and Bulgarian outfit Botev Plovdiv. A product of Boulogne’s system, Eto’o’s career trajectory has seen him earn recognition for his adaptability, having operated as both a defensive and attacking midfielder, as well as covering wide roles during his time with the Indomitable Lions.
Maccabi Netanya’s management are said to have approved Eto’o’s signing internally, identifying him as a strategic addition capable of bolstering the club’s midfield depth and quality.
The Israeli side is reportedly pushing hard to finalise the deal before the transfer deadline.
Eto’o’s potential switch comes months after Italian club Lazio were linked with the Cameroonian international, with Africasoccer previously reporting interest from Serie A. While a move to Italy failed to materialise, the midfielder now looks set to embark on a new chapter in Israel’s top flight.
CSKA Sofia, meanwhile, continue preparations for their upcoming league clash against Slavia Sofia in the Bulgarian top division. The club could soon face the prospect of losing one of their most influential midfielders if negotiations with Maccabi Netanya reach a conclusion in the coming days.
With the Israeli transfer window nearing its close, Eto’o’s future is expected to be decided imminently, and Maccabi Netanya remain determined to secure his signature as they aim to strengthen their squad for the season ahead.
